Our Story

The Koodai Studio: Handwoven Plastic Wire Baskets with a Modern Soul

If you grew up in Tamil Nadu in the 80s or 90s, the plastic wire koodai — a handwoven basket made from brightly coloured plastic wire — was everywhere. Sturdy, lightweight, and endlessly useful, these traditional baskets carried our lunch to school, our vegetables home from the market, and our snacks to the beach.

Along highways, village roads, and street corners, women artisans would sit under the shade of trees, weaving these plastic wire bags by hand — a craft passed down over generations.

At The Koodai Studio, we are proud to reimagine this humble everyday basket for the modern world. Our collection of handwoven recycled plastic wire koodais is bold, minimal, and made to last — rooted in Tamil heritage but designed for contemporary living.

Every koodai bag we create is handcrafted by women artisans in rural India, supporting livelihoods and preserving an age-old craft tradition. These women don’t just weave bags — they weave dignity, resilience, and financial independence into every loop and knot.

As a child, I didn’t think twice about the koodai — I longed for shiny, store-bought bags. But today, I see it differently. I see the quiet artistry, the sustainable design, and the story of a community that finds strength in skill and simplicity.

With every handwoven koodai from The Koodai Studio, you’re not just carrying your things — you’re carrying a story. A legacy of craftsmanship, care, and community.

Welcome to The Koodai Studio.
